As soon as everything went on the computer it got easier in some respects, but I never felt connected the same way. Before I could play and record, stack the tracks. There were limitations but the sound that came back was just more inviting to me. I played that for ages! I was creative and happy! I also love that I get to be in kickass bands with other musicians, some of the best musicians in the worl d!

Rumpus: Was the guitar a spontaneous gift or had you been asking for one? Rumpus: Did you grow up in a very musical environment? Rumpus: Were there specific bands or musicians that you tried to emulate?
Rumpus: But yet you switched to bass pretty early on? Rumpus: How did you get your first bass gig? Dorsey: Oh yeah! Down on Chestnut Street. Sam Goody. Rumpus: Yep. My cousin worked at Sam Goody. Dorsey: Wow. Rumpus: Definitely. Rumpus: The city was so segregated in those days. Dorsey: Which version? There have been a lot of versions. There was little else other than music and anything to do with art that interested me as a child and throughout my youth.
From painting, to acting, to cinema, dance something I am sadly terrible at! At this point in my life, I have come to recognize and appreciate that I was born knowing exactly what my purpose was in this lifetime, and that I was given the determination, the guidance, and the gifts to live it. PM: While there have been a lot of women singers in all styles of music, instrumentalists were more often male when you started out and probably to this day.
Do you think things have gotten better for women players? And if so, to what do you attribute that change? GAD: It is remarkable how far the presence of female musicians, in particular instrumentalists, has exploded around the world! Things have definitely gotten better for females, and those who identify as female in popular music today in terms of demand, visibility, the highest level of creativity, individuality, and skills.
Women are out there kicking ass all around the world! There were very few female musicians in bands, especially as drummers or bass players like myself when I was starting out. I think it is important to be able to see and be inspired by role models, an image not unlike oneself doing the thing you most want to do. I like to think, and hope, that I have been an inspiration role model for other female musicians to forge ahead against the odds towards their dreams and destinies.
It has taken some time, and the journey is far from over, but the ball is rolling now, and female musicians are finally claiming respect and equality in music and many other art forms predominantly dominated by men. PM: When David Bowie called you up to join him on that first project, what were you doing and what was your initial reaction?

But at the same time, in some ways not. Because I think all three of those bands got that certain kind of energy from a crowd. And then Andy would start smashing guitars. Did that concern you at all? Gail Ann Dorsey : I thought that was brilliant. I did not think that was unusual at all. That was my first tour with Bowie; I just was going along with it.
But I think it was really brilliant because I felt that they came there from the same scene, those two. David [Bowie] and Trent [Reznor] had such mutual respect for each other. We started the show, and then slowly, it melded into the Nine Inch Nails show, but without a break. It was fucking amazing. PKM: The set consisted of then-new material and an assortment of older album tracks.
Do you know what went into the selection of older songs to perform? I do not, unfortunately. I was just starting out, and all I cared about was that I do the job. I was terrified that it was going to be at some point out of my means. These were soulmates, artistic soulmates. Gail Ann Dorsey : No, no, he never told me, and I always wondered why.
He sang his ass off on that one. Whether you call it contemporary male vocal on a record ever, ever. They were in Philly, my hometown. So they used that Philly mojo on that record. It has just stunning vocals on that. So I just wanted to hear him sing those songs. PKM: I know that you went to London to launch your music career, but were you playing back in Philadelphia?
Gail Ann Dorsey : Oh, completely. I was begging for a guitar, like when I was five years old. I got my first acoustic guitar when I was nine and taught myself how to play it. I just started picking out stuff from records I was listening to. So I had it in this weird tuning for quite a long time. But even in the tuning, I still was able to figure out things like Rufus and Chaka Khan songs and little funk riffs.
I was just trying to learn whatever I could from my ear, which is still what I do. I started singing, as well. And I had my first band when I was 11 or 12 with two boys across the street. One of them went to school with me, the drummer, Tony, and then a few doors down from Tony was Ricky, who played bass. And when I was 12, my oldest brother bought me my first electric guitar.
And then we started playing stuff I wanted to play. Like Grand Funk Railroad, I was crazy about that band. And so I learned this kind of bluesy funk-rock, as best I could, But that was my inspiration. I started playing bass at I played all through high school, and then I just decided I wanted to make films. I was always interested in visual things, so I actually went to film school for college.
It was hard to look at music academically. It still is. Gail Ann Dorsey : Not really. I was still involved in it a little bit when I was in my early days, working with Bowie. He had me shooting a lot of things.

Sometimes he allowed me to film things for his use in promotion. He used to tease me and say I was the resident filmmaker of the band. Even with music, I find it hard to be digital. I was much better with analog media, both visually and musically, with recording. With tape and film, even cassettes in video cameras. The length of the production impacted on the band's management company, who had financially over-extended themselves in other business matters and were hoping for an earlier release date to pay off their debts.
The album retained the band's epic sound while showing increasing influences ranging from jazz and blues to the Beatlesthe latter being evident on the hit single " Sowing the Seeds of Love ". The album was a worldwide success, entering the UK Albums Chart at no. The band set out on an extensive "Seeds of Love" world tour sponsored by Philips to start recovering the debt incurred during the recording process.
The band's show in Santa Barbara, Californiain May would be captured on the Going to California live video as the singles " Advice for the Young at Heart " and " Famous Last Words " delivered modest chart success. A page companion book, simply titled Tears for Fears — The Seeds of Lovewas released by Virgin Books in and offered extensive insight from Orzabal, Holland and Adams into the songwriting and production process for the album, as well as the musical scores for each track and rare promotional photographs from the era.
After The Seeds of LoveOrzabal and Smith had an acrimonious falling out and parted company in The split was blamed on Orzabal's perfectionist approach to production and delays caused by Smith's jetsetting lifestyle and desire to slow down the pace of their work Smith was also going through a divorce at the time. The single was released to promote the band's greatest hits collection Tears Roll Down Greatest Hits 82—92which featured every single to reach the Top 20, either in the UK or internationally, apart from the Sport Aid fundraiser.
